Battlefields, budgies and best practice!

SoR student observer, Mark Terry, reports from the second annual Eastern Region Student Conference.

Radiography experts gave us food for thought with presentations on a variety of topics from PET CT, to war radiography and chest x-ray interpretations.

Rajna Kanum, a radiography student from City University travelled from London to attend the study day held at West SuffolkHospital, Bury St Edmunds.

She explains, “The mixture of lectures that were given throughout the day was very diverse. It enabled you to touch upon the different aspects of radiography; everything from radiography in the warzone and veterinary radiography.”

Radiography in action
The speakers included consultant anaesthetist, Dr Jeremy Field, who gave an insight into the involvement of radiography in the battlefield, using the current situation in Iraq as an example. He explained how the medical unit work as a close team, always prepared to be called upon and praised the effectiveness of radiographers in the team.

Beverley Wiseman, senior radiographer from West Suffolk Hospital, presented a practical session on chest x-ray interpretation. She looked at clinical signs, and the areas of the chest that provide points of clinical information. Student participation was encouraged and proved to be hugely popular.

There were also interview techniques from a trust HR department, an examination of measured dose levels and an enjoyable talk from veterinary radiographer, Sue Whitfield, which included lots of cute images of pets of every shape and size.

The conference also nominated and elected two new student reps for the Eastern region, Neil Jones (second year, University Campus Suffolk) and Jacci Jones (final year, Anglian Ruskin University). Congratulations to them both.

An encouraging day
The whole day was well supported by the regions universities, with University Campus Suffolk allowing years two and three to attend through a designated study day whether they were in academic or clinical placement.

The day proved to be immensely successful with nearly 50 students attending; this will hopefully lead to the student conference to be a permanent fixture on the curriculum in the near future. We are already planning the next conference to be bigger and better than ever!
