Derby students do the iPod shuffle

Radiography students are being given iPods loaded with useful tutorials.

The University of Derby has given 35 devices - costing £99 each - to students, to give them "different ways to learn".

Each iPod has pre-loaded video lessons, including demonstrations of patient positioning.

It is hoped the portable video demonstrations will be more useful than traditional text books.

Sue Errett, who also works in the radiography department at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, backed the initiative.

She said: “The iPod videos are a fantastic resource. It clearly shows the region of interest to be included for each x-ray and also demonstrates both bony and surface anatomy, which will greatly assist the students in understanding each positioning technique.”

Derby has issued 35 BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography students with the iPod, featuring a DVD of radiographic techniques demonstrating how to correctly position patients for their x-ray. They say this means that by accessing their iPod students can ‘brush up’ on their positioning skills outside the classroom – while at home, on work placements in hospitals or even on the bus.

The iPod delivers purpose-made video footage and graphic animations with commentary on how the positioning techniques of the upper and lower limbs, skull and chest should be carried out.

Said Derby student Paul Liles: "The ipod has been a great help for me. The graphics  show a real examination clearly, with a concise narrative on all pertinent technical points. All of the basic techniques are demonstrated and listed in a menu style format. It allows us to fast-forward to a part of a lecture we may not have understood the first time or review complicated positions before exams.

"It's like having your lecturer by your side, right when you need it. Considering the rapid evolvement of technology today, the pace at which students have to adjust to new ideas and the future of radiography, I see this and other new technologies all playing a greater role in the future of health and education"
