As the programme announcements come in thick and fast, this year's United Kingdom Radiological Congress (UKRC) looks set to have more education opportunities for students than ever before.
The three day multidisciplinary congress covers all aspects of diagnostic imaging and oncology, as well as radiology informatics and service delivery.
This year it takes place on Monday 8 to Wednesday 10 June at Manchester Central, Manchester.
The programme includes a range of free and paid for CPD sessions.
Following on from the success at UKRC 2008, ‘Education on the Stand’ will be available free to all delegates at UKRC 2009. This is an opportunity to take part in structured and approved learning during the exhibition. Participating exhibitors will present information on new technology and developments, new techniques and technological advances in medicine.
Companies including Siemens, Toshiba, GE, Agfa and Philips branch out from their usual equipment displays, running a series of educational workshops, lectures and hands on demos. Delegates who attend gained a CoR accredited CPD certificate for their portfolio.
In the main scientific programme, for paying delegates, will be several sessions on career development.
SoR president, Michael Graveling, will give the SoR Scope of Radiographic Practice 2009 session on Wednesday 10 June, exploring the continuing expansion of the scope of practice of the radiography profession, together with career progression across the profession.
Two other sessions on career progression include Scope of Radiographic Practice – the 2008 research outcomes by Dr Richard Price and Mr Fraser Heasman and Career Progression in Radiography under Agenda for Change, presented by Ms Hazel Edwards.
This year, for the first time the UK Radiological Congress will also hold a session specifically for students.
Jo Craft, third year diagnostic student and rep at Canterbury Christ Church, reported on her first UKRC last year. "There is so much to do, it’s hard to know where to start! There were lectures on topics from trauma imaging, PACS implementation to local and national health policy. Sessions are presented by experts in the field, who are happy to answer any questions, either at the time or at a later date if you want to contact them.
"I opted to attend a lot of the trauma lectures and have already incorporated some of the information into my assignments and clinical practice. Even for first years still getting to grips with the basics, the lectures will stand you in good stead for later on in your course."
Students receive significant savings when registering for UKRC. The rates are £40 for one day, £55 for two days, £70 for three days inclusive of VAT.
