The Society has published the Scope of Practice 2009.
Professor Audrey Paterson, SoR director of professional policy, is encouraging all radiography students to read the document she says is a "high level, overarching description" of the radiography role.
The document is based on the evidence from the research project Scope of Radiographic Practice 2008, undertaken last year by University of Hertfordshire in collaboration with the Institute for Employment Studies.
It encourages radiographers to 'seize opportunities for developing their roles within an ever more dynamic health care environment', though stressing that individuals must be adequately educated and trained.
Professor Paterson said the scope holds good news for students as they enter what is a growing and developing profession: "The scope of practice for radiography is very broad. The beauty of this is that it allows our practice to grow as patients, healthcare needs and technology changes. We've seen the benefit of this in the amazing range of advanced and consultant practice that's now an accepted part of the profession."
