Most newly qualified radiographers are finding work within the first few months after graduation, a new survey shows.
Preliminary findings of the SoR Graduate Survey 2009 reveal nearly 90% of radiography graduates from 2008 started their first job within two months of qualifying. Of this year's graduates, 75% already had a job arranged as of July.
Graduates were overwhelmingly positive about their first year working with over 90% of respondents agreeing it had met their expectations.
The main reasons given by those who didn’t have a job arranged were that they were restricted to a specific geographical area, or that they had been so far unsuccessful at interview.
Samantha Jewell, SoR student officer, said: "The exceptionally high percentage of students who have secured jobs before or just after graduation is fantastic and should surely be very encouraging for those students yet to qualify."
However, debt was shown to be a key concern for students. The average respondent was in debt by between £5000 and £10,000 on the date of their graduation.
Even more worryingly, around 30% said they were over £10,000 in debt at graduation, or expected to be.
The SoR survey has been completed online by 600 radiography students and recent graduates in the UK. A full report on the findings will be available later this month.
