Going for Goldcoast!

The International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISSRT) is inviting abstracts for its forthcoming World Congress.

The 16th ISRRT World Congress will be held in Gold Coast, Australia between 9-12 September 2010.

The scientific programme will follow the theme Tomorrow and Beyond: Connecting and Communicating, highlighting the growing connections between imaging and radiotherapy and promoting the growth in communications between the professions and for practitioners across the world.

The event promises to be a stimulating, professional and educational experience. Rob George, ISRRT president, commented: “ISRRT world congresses historically offer not only an insight into the latest technological advances and techniques, but will also give you an international perspective on your profession and an opportunity to exchange experiences and make new friends to ensure your experience at this meeting will endure.”

The ISRRT anticipates attendees from over 50 countries, together with approximately 1000 radiographers and radiation therapists from Australia and Asia. Aside from the professional programme, the Gold Coast of Australia allows easy access to the Great Barrier Reef, Far North Queensland, Sydney, Brisbane and the Australian Outback.

Delegates looking to present oral or poster presentations should submit abstracts online by 31 January 2010.

Last year Salford students Eppie Muranda and Alison Burke-Tomlinson travelled to Durban to attend the meeting.

They joined Salford University tutor Lesley Robinson in a presentation on her research examining the needs of non-traditional students studying on a problem-based learning radiography programme. The trip was the culmination of weekly activities arranged by Lesley throughout their course for students who lacked confidence in public speaking.

Said Eppie: “I was having difficulty participating on my course and was very quiet in class before I joined the group. In fact, I nearly dropped out until I went to Lesley and she took on board what I said and offered me support via the confident speaking group. She invited others to come and arranged weekly activities to build our confidence so by the time I was in Durban it came easily.”

"It was a pleasure to have an opportunity to go to ISSRT in Durban. The congress was situated 10 minutes from the hotel I was in and the hotel also faced the sea which was marvellous. I never dreamt that one day I would be among the Radiologist and Radiographer delegates."
