Latest in breast, ultrasound and IR(ME)R

Impress your tutor using the SoR's online document library to keep you up to date on the latest developments in your practice and profession.

This month look out for the following new reports:

Analysis of Ultrasound Workforce Survey 2009: In September 2009, the SoR surveyed NHS ultrasound departments in the UK about the recruitment, training and retention of the ultrasound workforce. 45 managers answered a range of questions about their workforce on behalf of their departments in an online questionnaire. This document presents an analysis of the survey and highlights the main findings from those who responded.

Developing and Growing the Sonographer workforce: Education Training needs: This paper identifies the current ultrasound educational pathways for the monographer workforce in the UK, and suggests additional pathways that could be implemented rapidly if supported by the health departments, strategic health authorities and health boards, as well as identifying other options for increasing the ultrasound workforce.

Employee Development, Review and Progression (including the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework): This document sets out the SoR's expectations regarding employee development, review and progression. Part one considers general principles and recommends best practice in the use of employer-led systems to support these. Part two then considers these principles within the context of the UK National Health Service Knowledge and Skills Framework.

IR(ME)R 2000 and IR(ME) Amendment Regulations 2006: Radiation protection principles and UK legislation are the responsibility of all professionals working with radiation and this guidance booklet - which has been produced by the SCoR, with the aid of representatives from the profession -  provides information and policy guidance from SCoR which should be of use to all radiographers, radiography students and radiography assistant practitioners (AP). The booklet has been produced with a "toolkit" approach having live hyperlinks to various websites giving direct access to specific legislation as well as published guidance relating to radiation protection matters from other organisations.

Analysis of breast screening appointment lengths survey: In August 2009, the SoR surveyed members carrying out breast screening in the UK about nominal appointment lengths. Over 200 respondents answered a range of questions in an online questionnaire about how much more time they have per client, their workload and the effects of setting nominal appointment lengths. This document neatly presents an analysis of the results from this survey.
