Can we do without a doctor?

Should radiographers be allowed to provide their own health reference when they join their professional register?

This is the question posed in a new consultation from regulator the Health Professions Council (HPC).

Under current HPC rules, radiographers applying to join the professional register must provide a health reference from a doctor.

The consultation proposes that the health reference should be replaced with a self-declaration to confirm that the applicant does not have a health condition that would affect the safe and effective practice of their profession.

Richard Evans, SoR CEO, said: "The new rules will directly affect qualifying students so it would be great to have their views to inform our response to the HPC.

"On the face of it we welcome the proposals and urge that the necessary legislative changes be undertaken as speedily as possible, but if you agree or disagree now is the time to tell us!"

Send your response to SoR professional officer for education and students, Samantha Jewell by 5 February 2010.
