The word on conduct and ethics

'Treat all patients equally', 'always reference other people’s
work' and 'you are responsible for your own learning': these are just some of the golden rules set out in a new code of conduct for radiography students.

The guidance comes from the Health Professions Council (HPC), the regulating body which keeps a register of health professionals.

Radiography students must meet the Council's standards on training, professional skills, behaviour and health while they study. On qualification they must then register with the Council in order to practice as a radiographer.

The Council has recently made several changes to the standards that it uses to approve education programmes. One of these changes is that programmes must have processes for dealing with concerns about a student’s behaviour. This means that misconduct may affect your ability to complete your programme.

Michael Guthrie, Director of Policy and Standards explains:

“Studying to become a professional in a regulated profession, you have certain responsibilities. On your programme you will be expected to meet high standards of conduct and ethics.

"We hope the guidance will be useful to you both on your training and once you are working. It will be one of the first introductions to the HPC for students and will outline what is expected of you once you join our Register.”
