Students wow professionals at RT weekend

Over 200 professionals from the world of radiotherapy and cancer care gathered in Birmingham last weekend for what is one of the most eagerly anticipated and well-attended events in the SCoR calendar.

Representatives from almost every RT department in Britain joined industry and SCoR staff to network with peers and discuss current issues relating to the delivery and development of RT services in the UK.

Programme highlights included ‘Service Leaders of the Future’, a report from the national virtual reality in radiotherapy (VERT) project; launch of the SoR accreditation scheme for advanced and consultant level practice and the latest on IMRT clinical practice.

Pride of the profession

A hard act to follow for three final year students invited to present their dissertations at the conference, but radiographers in the audience praised their contribution to the debate.

Professional officer, Rachel Harris, said: "For the first time we had three final year student dissertations presented. This filled me with great pride, hope and excitement for the future of the profession."

The trio, all from Cardiff University, were: Kirstin Murray, speaking on 'clinical adaptations for patients with implanted cardiac pacemakers receiving radiotherapy'; Lauren Evans giving a review of cardiac pacemaker policy of a radiotherapy department and Vicki Knight whose presentation asked 'are diets effective in the management of radiation induced diarrhoea?'

Said Rachel: "Lauren, Kirstin and Victoria presented so confidently and eloquently. We look forward to seeing their work in the future and watching their careers grow. Next year – as we did this year – there will be a separate second call for student papers and we hope to have this as an important session at future events."

In the events feedback, the student's research featured heavily as one of the highlights for delegates. One radiographer wrote: 'One area of the conference that was really enjoyable was the student presentations and this has given me impetus to encourage our students to present next year'.
