Would you like to take over from Alex as Student Observer?
"Some people in the profession have an attitude to students of 'they are only students and what do they know?', but the Society is willing to listen to student views."
Third year Alex Randell was elected as the SoR Student Observer to Council last year.
Over the past year he has been a national rep for students and attended SoR UK Council meetings, something not even SoR professional officers can do.
The meetings are a closed democratic process for deciding policy and strategy within the Society and improving the services it provides for members.
His position observer meant although he could not vote on issues, he could participate in the discussions and influence decisions.
Now, as his year as observer comes to a close, Alex is encouraging new students to come forward and volunteer for the role.
"When I first started as a student I hadn't heard about what the Society can do, but when I went on placement I was lucky enough to go to Cheltenham and meet two very good reps. They encouraged me to join them at the SoR Annual Delegates Conference to see how the organisation works.
"It was really interesting to see at the meetings how much work goes into making decisions and including students and members in the Society's work. I would urge other students to get involved in the Society, taking on a role such as the observer is a fantastic way to demonstrate students' professionalism both to the radiography community and to prospective employers."
Samantha Jewell is the SoR professional officer for education and students, she regards the Student Observer to Council as a hugely important role as it represents the student voice.
"We rely heavily on the student observer to highlight student issues at Council and provide the strategic direction the organisation should be heading in to meet the requirements of the student today. I hope we will have several candidates to take over this role after Alex's term in this role comes to an end."
The ADC conference will take place this year in Leeds from 25-27 April. Contact your regional officer for more information about student places and how you can volunteer as student observer.
