Two DVD volumes have been published by the UK branch of the International Association of Forensic Radiographers (IAFR).
Filmed in November 2008 as part of a training exercise for the National Emergency Mortuary Arrangements (NEMA), they serve as an outline of the role of radiography in the investigation of mass fatality incidents currently provided in this country by the UK Forensic Radiography Response Team (UKFRRT).
The first DVD, Completing the Jigsaw provides an overview of the services provided by the UKFRRT in the event of a mass fatality incident. It includes testimonials from deployed radiographers and other members of the multidisciplinary investigation team that united in response to the 7/7 bombings in London.
The value of fluoroscopy, plain film and dental imaging techniques in the emergency mortuary is acknowledged by coroners and pathologists, and the arrangements (including forensic radiography provision) for dealing with the deceased following this incident are quoted as the being the international gold standard for care of the deceased in these circumstances.
Emily Faircloth, communications officer, IAFR commented: “The DVD serves as a powerful reminder of some of the experiences and challenges that faced radiographers involved after the 7/7 bombings, and the fulfilments of participating in such a team in providing evidence to support post mortem identification and forensic investigation of this incident. It also demonstrates just how far the IAFR has evolved over the past 10 years.”
An additional DVD provides a visual reference tool for UKFRRT members to return to when in need of practical guidance in the provision of post mortem imaging and the demonstration of best practice in a challenging environment such as the emergency mortuary. The DVD reinforces practical training provided by IAFR for its UKFRRT members.
The DVDs join a host of other professional guidance and development tools designed by IAFR which include guidance documents and technique quizzes.
