Richard Evans, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Radiographers, is set to appear on a forthcoming edition of the BBC's The One Show to talk about the use of CT scanning for self referral lifestyle screening.
Filmed in the Saad Centre for Radiography Clinical Skills Education at City University, London - where students have access to a CT scanner - the interviewer quizzed Richard on various topics, including:
- The difference between CT and normal x-rays;
- The difference in dose levels;
- What damage can be done, and
- The difference with MRI and why this was not used instead
In answering the questions, Richard emphasised that:
- The radiation dose implication is not trivial;
- Commercial marketing of services preys on fears amongst the "worried well";
- Anyone worried about their health should consult their GP;
- The adaptation of the COMARE recommendations by the DH is positive and sets stricter controls on these services, and
- The involvement of Tesco is unhelpful as it tends to engender trust in the companies offering CT rather than a critical view including risk.
Richard's interview is likely to be screened on 28 April, although a definite date will be confirmed shortly.
