One Show investigates MOT CT scans

The SoR has appeared on national television to air its views on MOT CT scans.

In an interview for the BBC’s The One Show, the SoR’s CEO Richard Evans expressed concern about the marketing techniques of companies such as LifeScan and the dangers of unnecessary radiation exposure.

The interview, conducted by TV presenter and consumer champion Dominic Littlewood, formed part of a larger feature which was screened on Tuesday 28 April. The six-minute report explored the issues surrounding lifestyle scanning for the worried well.

During the interview, Richard stated: “Every exposure to radiation has to be fully justified and the potential risk balanced against the benefit of having the scan.

“It’s the commercial pressure that really worries members of the Society of Radiographers; the fact that people can get themselves in a position where they can be exposed to radiation without potentially needing to have that done.”

Also appearing on the show were GP Andrew Green, who strongly opposes lifestyle scanning, and John Giles, clinical director of Lifescan UK.

To view the feature visit the BBC iPlayer site and skip to 1:45 minutes.
