South west students gained technical and professional insight at the region's first study day held soley for students.
Speakers from radiography and industry gave technical presentations on Rapid Arc Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), PET CT and Tomotherapy.
Patient Andy Secombe told the story of his treatment for cancer, which included surgery, peg insertion, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Tim Relf, senior MRI radiographer at Derriford hospital spoke of his experiences when he was in the Navy on a hospital ship that went out for the Iraq war and Nick Napper, HR officer at Taunton Hospital, gave tips for students to be 'interesting at interview'.
Third year radiotherapy student Joanna Houlding, from University of the West of England, attended the study day which was held in Taunton.
She said:"It was a really useful day. It slanted more towards the diagnostic side but this was completely understandable considering most of the students attending were diagnostic students and it gave us more information about each others' profession. It also gave us an insight into areas we may not have come into much contact with previously such as the armed forces and the presentation on the use of IMRT for treating cancer patients.
"I would definitely recommend other students to go, particularly the
students in the first and second year who probably won't have seen or
heard much about the topics spoken on at the study day, for
future reference."
Linda Bedford, senior 1 radiographer and vice-chair for the south west region's, organised the day. She said: “The south west region universities fully supported the day and allowed all three years of students the day off to attend as study leave whether they were in university or on placement.
"The day proved a roaring success with 200 students attending and we plan to repeat it in 18 months' time. I would encourage students to check out what's on in their region and maybe get involved in planning the event too!"
